Mental Health and Substance Use Outpatient Services Referral
BC Children’s Hospital Mental Health and Substance Use Outpatient Services support children and youth experiencing a variety of mental health and/or substance use concerns.
We provide psychiatric and multidisciplinary consultation and treatment across our clinics, for children and youth who require care but are not staying overnight in the hospital. We provide care to children and youth up to their 19th birthday.
Our team provides support for a variety of conditions. These include mental health concerns and substance use issues.
Conditions we support:
- Mood and anxiety disorders
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and OCD-related disorders
- Neuropsychiatric disorders
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related impulse-control disorders
- Medical and mental health co-occurring concerns including mental health-related metabolic conditions
- Early childhood mental health concerns
Please note: we do not provide assessments for autism or learning ability, or for legal purposes, such as custody and access.
We accept referrals from health-care providers such as community psychiatrists, pediatricians, family doctors or nurse practitioners.
Before completing a referral
Please consider the Compass Mental Health program first. This service offers guidance and support to care providers.
It helps to:
- Clarify diagnoses
- Recommend medications
- Plan therapeutic treatment
- Coordinate care for children and youth

Provincial Mental Health and Metabolic Program referral steps

Complete the referral form
Complete the Provincial Mental Health and Metabolic Program referral form (PDF). Include the requested assessment information noted on the form.

Send the referral
Fax the completed referral form and the requested assessment information to 604-875-2271.
Child and adolescent mental health outpatient psychiatry referral steps

Complete the referral form
Complete the outpatient referral form (PDF) and include the following:
- Your consult or consultation report outlining areas of significant concerns
- All the required information
- Assessment reports if there is a diagnosis of FASD, ASD or intellectual disability

Send the referral
Fax the form to 604-875-2099.

Post referral
We aim to respond by fax within a week or two. We will indicate whether we have accepted the referral, require more information, or have declined it.
If you have not already done so, please let your patient and their parent or caregiver know that we will contact them directly with an appointment date and time if we accept the referral.
