General Surgery
The General Surgery Clinic provides surgical treatment for head and neck, thoracic, digestive and oncologic diseases for children of all ages. We play an active role in treating birth defects, traumatic injuries, and vascular access. We also provide nursing support for gastrostomy tube insertion and care, stomas, bowel management and complex soft tissue wounds.
The general surgery team treats children and youth for a variety of conditions, including:
- Abdominal wall hernias
- Soft tissue lumps and bumps
- Intestinal conditions such as Hirschsprung disease and anorectal malformations
- Specialized feeding needs requiring surgically placed gastrostomy tubes
- Lung lesions
- Certain types of solid organ tumours
- Chest wall differences
Referral information
Children and youth need a referral from a doctor or a nurse practitioner to access this service. Providers can find more details on the process via the General Surgery Referral page.
Appointment details
During your child or youth's visit, you may initially see a student or resident doctor, followed by a pediatric surgeon.
The clinical team may request certain diagnostic tests, such as blood tests or imaging tests like an ultrasound. You may to complete them at a separate appointment. If your child or youth attends other hospital clinics at BC Children's Hospital, we will do our best to coordinate visits.
Your appointment with the pediatric surgeon will take approximately 30 minutes.
