The University of British Columbia Department of Pediatrics offers a fully accredited pediatric residency training program, in addition to a number of subspecialty training opportunities. Further information can be obtained through Carms: the Canadian Resident Matching Service.
The division of cardiology has a proven track record in sub-specialty training for more than 20 years and has produced several pediatric cardiologists currently in practice in Canada. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada have fully approved this program, which generally accommodates two Canadian residents and one clinical Fellow from abroad. The program offers a wide range of exposure to clinical, academic and research venues with a strong teaching background provided by the staff cardiologists, most of who are current or past examiners in the subspecialty. For further information and /or applications for training, contact Dr. Shreya Moodley, Program Director at smoodley@cw.bc.ca
The University of British Columbia has an accredited cardiovascular and thoracic residency training program in which residents are required to complete six months of cardiovascular surgery training. Children’s Heart Centre’s Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Program has provided sub-specialty education and training for residents for more than 25 years. Because of the decreased number of funded positions and resident trainees in the program, the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Division developed a Pediatric Cardiovascular Fellowship program in 2002. At any one time, a Fellow or resident is in training within the Children’s Heart Centre’s Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Division.
The training program offers exposure to a full complement of pediatric congenital heart diseases; techniques of cardiopulmonary bypass, including extra corporeal membrane oxygenation; and thoracic and vascular experience. The program also provides and encourages research opportunities.
