Our Medical Imaging Department at BC Children’s Hospital provides a comprehensive range of primary and specialized diagnostic imaging and image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic services to children and adolescents across British Columbia (B.C.). Our team is skilled in managing complex and challenging cases in infants, adolescents, and women, offering specialized care for unusual and therapeutically demanding conditions.
Our services support all areas of the hospital and clinics, with procedures covered by the Medical Services Plan (MSP) for B.C. residents. Medical Imaging plays a critical role in diagnosing and managing conditions from congenital heart disease to gastrointestinal issues, working alongside multidisciplinary teams to provide exceptional care
General radiography captures images of the body using X-rays, helping diagnose a range of conditions. Our technologists work with state-of-the-art X-ray equipment, ensuring high-quality imaging while minimizing radiation exposure for our young patients.
CT is a fast and readily accessible diagnostic tool that provides detailed imaging, making it invaluable to quickly assess trauma and identify injuries. Its ability to rapidly evaluate complex conditions helps guide timely treatment decisions in emergency situations.
Ultrasound imaging is commonly used for diagnosing conditions related to soft tissues, organs, and blood flow. This non-invasive procedure is essential for a range of diagnostic needs, from abdominal concerns to cardiac imaging.
Nuclear Medicine scans use small amounts of radioactive material to evaluate the function of organs and tissues, providing insights into a variety of pediatric conditions.
MRI offers detailed images of the body’s structures without using radiation. It is especially useful in diagnosing neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, and our team ensures that each scan is safe and child-friendly in approach.
Interventional Radiology performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using fluoroscopy and digital angiography. Procedures often involve inserting small catheters into blood vessels to highlight specific vascular structures or guide treatments. Key services include:
- Cardiac Procedures: Used to assess heart anatomy and function, particularly in cases of congenital heart disease.
- Vascular Procedures: Includes angioplasties, stent insertions, and embolization.
- Interventional Procedures: Biopsies, gastric tube placements, and drainage insertions are performed with advanced imaging guidance, supported by anesthetic equipment to ensure patient comfort.
Medical Imaging Technologists at BC Children’s Hospital have access to ongoing training, mentorship, and development within a multidisciplinary environment. Our team is committed to innovative practices and compassionate care, offering unique exposure to complex pediatric cases that provide opportunities for professional growth.
BC Children’s Hospital offers clinical placements and mentorship programs for Medical Imaging Technologists. Our facility’s state-of-the-art equipment and specialized imaging labs provide an ideal setting for developing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic skills, especially in pediatric and women’s health imaging.
Technologists have the chance to work with advanced imaging techniques specific to pediatric care, gaining experience in procedures that are rare outside of specialized children’s hospitals. Our team fosters a supportive environment that encourages learning and professional development.
Positions require a diploma or degree in Medical Radiography or a related field and registration with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). Experience in pediatric imaging is an asset.
Our Medical Imaging Department uses a range of diagnostic tools, including general radiography (X-ray), CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, MRI, and specialized interventional procedures, providing comprehensive imaging services across pediatric and women’s health.
Imaging technologists at BC Children’s Hospital typically work shifts ranging from 07:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 24:00. Some positions also require on-call availability after hours, as well as coverage on weekends and statutory holidays to support emergency and inpatient care.
Our technologists play a vital role in diagnosing and managing a wide range of health conditions. They work closely with the care team to provide accurate and timely imaging, contributing to a holistic approach to patient treatment and management.
