Social Work Careers at BC Children’s Hospital & BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre

Social Workers are vital members of the health care teams at BC Children’s Hospital, BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre, and Sunny Hill Health Centre, which are all part of one health care campus. Our Social Workers hold bachelor's and master's degrees in social work, bringing essential skills and experience to support patients and families dealing with complex medical and mental health conditions. We employ approximately 95 Social Workers across full-time, part-time, and casual roles, providing direct care seven days a week.

What We Do

Across BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Care Centre, Social Workers offer comprehensive support through assessment, counseling, care coordination, advocacy, and practical assistance. With a family-centred approach, they consider the patient within their family and social context, empowering the health care team to make informed, compassionate care decisions. Social Workers take a lead role in crisis and grief counseling and help families navigate the practical challenges of receiving medical care away from home. At discharge, they support families in planning for continued care at home.

Our Social Work department values candidates committed to Indigenous Cultural Safety, cultural humility, and trauma-informed practice, ensuring equitable, compassionate care for all.
