In 2018, the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Rwanda (UR) established a partnership to promote and foster the development of training for medical trainees. This partnership supports knowledge exchange and capacity building by providing travel opportunities to trainees from Rwanda for further training in BC and for trainees and faculty from UBC to complete electives and placements at UR.
In 2020, after the COVID-19 pandemic prevented in-person opportunities, the partnership expanded to include a virtual learning platform to ensure the continued professional development of local and global medical professionals during the pandemic and beyond. Travel has since resumed, and in 2022 the team was awarded a CICH Global Health Seed Grant to pilot a clinical fellowship program in pediatric orthopedic surgery at BCCH, for clinicians from UR.
