What we do
Trauma spans the continuum of care, including injury prevention, pre-hospital, acute care and rehabilitation.
We provide care for thousands of injured children yearly, and are dedicated to improving trauma care for injured children locally, regionally and provincially. These injuries range from minor to severe.
Most injuries are predictable and preventable. We can all decrease our risk of injury by recognizing and acting on the risks.

Window falls
When children are young, their heads are proportionately larger than the rest of their bodies, so when they fall, their centre of gravity is towards the top and they often hit their heads first when they hit the ground. The result is can be brain or spine injuries as well as many other potential injuries or even death.
- keep furniture away from windows: kids love to climb and explore but do not underestimate their mobility! Children often learn to climb before walking.
- Screens are not made to keep kids in, only bugs out. Children lean on the screen to look out and do not understand that this will not hold them in.
- Install window opening control devices on windows to prevent children from opening the window more than 10cm or 4". If you are renovating, you can ask for these to be installed by the manufacturer on new windows at no cost to you and if you have newer windows you may have them installed already.
