Metabolic Nutrition

The BC Metabolic Nutrition Program provides specialized metabolic formulas and low protein foods to children and adults with inborn errors of metabolism.
About

We provide the metabolic formulas and low protein foods you need to help manage your inborn error of metabolism or metabolic condition.

Metabolic formulas

Your physician and dietitian will let us know what specialty formula to give you. The formulas you need to manage your inborn error of metabolism continue to be provided to BC residents free of charge.

Metabolic formula and amino acids are provided to you by the BC Metabolic Nutrition Program (BCMNP). Phone or email us when you need to order more formula or amino acids. The formula you have been prescribed is specially ordered for you. We need 4 weeks' notice to fill most formula orders.

BCMNP is no longer open for clients to pick up formula or amino acids in person. Your product will be delivered by courier. There will be no additional costs to you for this service.

Low protein foods

Your dietitian will talk to you if you need these special foods.

BCMNP is partnered with National Food Distribution Centre to provide low protein foods. All the low protein foods you wish to purchase with your subsidy now come directly to you from our approved vendor, National Food Distribution Centre. This includes a wide variety of cold ship and shelf stable low protein foods.

When you are ready to place your next food order, phone National Food. The phone number is 1-888-606-6676 ext. 225. You will speak directly with Lyne. The order desk is open from 6am - 9am and 10am - 2pm (PST).

The order will be delivered right to your home. Dry or shelf stable foods should be received within one week. Cold ship or frozen foods are delivered by air from Montreal and then couriered to your door. You should receive cold foods within 5-10 days from when you placed the order.

The availability of Low Protein Foods will change as new products become available and other products are discontinued by the manufacturer. If you have questions about which foods are available, phone National Food and speak with Lyne. They have the most up to date information on which foods are available.

Here is a list of the foods available as of May 2021 (PDF).

To provide this service, we will collect some personal information including your name and address and provide it to National Food Distribution Centre so they can create a personal profile and arrange for delivery.

We collect your personal information as authorized under section 26(c) of the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act ("FIPPA") to provide metabolic formulas and low protein foods to you. We collect your name, address, telephone number and personal health number. If you have questions or concerns about how your information is collected or used, you may contact:

All eligible clients receive a yearly $3000 subsidy amount with an additional $200 per year for delivery costs. On September 1, each year, all clients receive a credit of $3200. You will have until August 31, the following year, to use this amount.  Any funds  not spent prior to August 31 are not carried over to the next year.

Yes. The cost to deliver your food order is included in the price of each food item.

You can order as often as you need to. There is a minimum dollar amount of $100 of cold ship foods per order if you are ordering cold ship foods.  Most people place a food order once a month or once every two months. All orders above $800 will be reviewed by your dietitian prior to processing.

Most orders with dry or shelf stable foods will be delivered to you within one week after you order.

Cold ship and frozen foods are delivered by air from Montreal and will be shipped every Monday. A courier will deliver the product to your home within 2 business days of when the order ships. You should receive your order approximately 1-2 weeks from when you place an order.

Sometimes a product will not be in stock. National Food will send the rest of your order. If an item has been backordered you will see a comment on the bottom of your packing slip.  If this happens, you will have to order the item again on your next order. You will only be charged for items you receive.

If there is a problem with your order, please call National Food at 1-888-606-6676 ext. 225.  Lyne will answer your questions and help resolve the problem.

You can also alert your dietitian if this issue has happened more than once.

We will only provide your name and address to National Food using a secure manner. This is to confirm with them you are a BCMNP client and your dietitian has recommended low protein foods for you.
