Preparation for construction begins at BC Children’s Hospital new centre for health complexity site

The main building is being demolished to make way for the new BC Children’s Hospital centre for health complexity, slated to open in early 2028.
It took the demolition crew just three weeks to demolish the above-ground section of the building – parts of which date back to 1912! The crew is now excavating the structures below ground and grading the site in preparation for construction. This phase of demolition will continue into the fall. Two other buildings on site – the Annex and the Hartman – are staying and will be repurposed.
Construction of the new BC Children’s Hospital centre for health complexity is scheduled to begin in spring 2025. It will be a brand new, purpose-built facility for children with the most complex medical conditions and their families. You can see the latest renderings of the new centre here.
