Accessibility supports
BC Children’s Hospital has several accessibility supports across our campus.
For information on options, see Parking and Transportation.
Navigation volunteers on our campus wear bright green vests. They are available in person to help you find your way around.
Please speak to them directly for support. You can find them at the hospital information desk, or call them at 1015 or 7571 from any hospital phone across our campus.
You can rent wheelchairs of a variety of sizes for children and youth.
Wheelchair locations
- Ambulatory Care Building
- Healthy Minds Centre
- Teck Acute Care Centre – medical imaging, inpatient units and the Anesthetic Care Unit
The majority of our washrooms across BC Children's Hospital are accessible. If you need help finding your nearest washroom, please ask a member of staff or a navigation volunteer. Navigation volunteers wear green vests.
Many signs on campus include Braille, to make sure our facility is accessible to everyone, including people who are blind or have low vision.
We design signs with high-contrast colours to improve visibility for individuals with low vision. We place Braille signs at accessible heights and locations so that people who use Braille can easily touch and read them.
Porter services
Central Porter Services helps transport patients safely and efficiently during visits or stays at the hospital, for tests, surgical procedures and other services. Porters are trusted guides and companions to patients, and work alongside care teams across our campus.
If your child needs assistance from a porter, your doctor or nurse will coordinate this for you.
Safety on campus

Everyone has a right to feel respected and comfortable while they are receiving or providing care. The safety of everyone in our hospital is extremely important to us.
BC Children’s Hospital has security on-site 24/7 to support the entire campus community.
All relational security officers receive education in Indigenous cultural safety and humility as well as trauma- and violence-informed care. They wear a blue vest and shirt with khaki pants and work throughout the campus.
