Immunology
The Immunology Clinic at BC Children’s Hospital diagnoses and treats children and youth with suspected or confirmed inborn errors of immunity and secondary immune deficiencies. We assess patients that the Provincial Newborn Screening Program has identified with possible immunodeficiency.
Inborn errors of immunity represent a group of more than 500 unique conditions that affect how the immune system develops or works. These conditions can lead to difficulties with infections, organ inflammation, autoimmunity and cancer. Our clinical program also treats secondary immunodeficiencies, most often caused by long-term immunosuppressant use for autoimmune conditions, or chemotherapy used for childhood cancers.
We work closely with other pediatricians and subspecialists, using advanced diagnostic tools to understand the underlying causes of immune disorders. Treatment is patient-specific, guided by the particular immune condition.
You do not need to stay at the hospital to access our clinic. We offer province-wide consultations through virtual health visits for children, youth and families/caregivers who are unable to travel to Vancouver for in-person assessment.
Referral information
You need a referral from a doctor or nurse practitioner to access this service. Providers can find more details on the process via the Immunology Clinic referral page.
Appointment details
Please bring all medications to your appointment.
Our clinic is a teaching and learning environment in collaboration with the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Medicine. During your visit, it's likely that a resident (a medical doctor training to be an independent practitioner) or a pediatrician training to be an immunology specialist will assess your child or youth.
New consult appointments are typically 60-90 minutes long. We may request blood collection for laboratory tests after the appointment.
If you need to cancel or reschedule your child or youth's appointment, please call the clinic as soon as possible.
Many patients also access services in other areas or clinics of BC Children’s Hospital.
