Medical Day Unit

The Medical Day Unit provides specialized care for children and youth with complex chronic illnesses up to 18 years old. Our team provides a wide range of patient-care services, including:

• Transfusions and infusions
• Burn treatments
• Blood sampling through central lines
• Specialized testing
• Various procedures such as lumbar punctures, joint injections and laser therapy

As well as the Medical Day Unit, the clinical area includes the Medical Investigation Facility and the Diabetes Day Program.

Referral information

The Medical Day Unit is for children and youth who are already patients in another BC Children's Hospital program or clinic.

We do not accept external referrals.

BC Children's Hospital providers can call the Medical Day Unit to request an appointment for their patient.

Appointment details

On the day of your child's appointment, please plan to stay with them for their entire visit.

• We have a selection of iPads, games and toys. If your child or youth will be with us for several hours, we recommend bringing your child's favourite games, books or hobbies to help pass the time. Remember why you are coming to the Medical Day Unit (e.g. intravenous procedures, sedation, etc.) when you choose
• We provide snack foods such as juice, yogurts, popsicles, toast, cereals and canned products. We also have a kettle, toaster and microwave. If you are staying over a mealtime or prefer your own snacks, please plan to bring or buy your own food
• Your child might like their own pillow, blanket or stuffed animal
• If your infant or child uses formula, please bring your own supply
• Bring all of your child's prescriptions and medications, especially those they may need to take during their stay

We will send you a text or email reminder two weeks and then three days before your appointment.

If your schedule has changed and you are unable to attend your appointment, please call: 604-875-3680. You can leave a voicemail if we do not answer. We will reschedule your appointment and release your time slot to another family.

We provide services from Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:42 p.m. The clinic is closed on Saturday, Sunday and statutory holidays.

Directions: The clinic is on the hospital's second floor in Area 2C. Take the elevator from the first floor of the main BC Children's Hospital building to the second floor, and follow the signs.
