Endocrinology Referral
Our clinics include:
- Endocrinology Clinic
- Diabetes Clinic
- Gender Clinic
Referral overview
A child's primary care provider, such as their family doctor, nurse practitioner or pediatrician, or a local emergency department, can make referrals to our clinics.
The Gender Clinic also accepts referrals from psychiatrists.
Referral steps
-
Complete the referral form
Fill in the appropriate referral form completely, including a growth chart and any relevant laboratory reports.
If information is missing, there may be a delay in your patient's referral acceptance and appointment scheduling.
Endocrine Clinic referral process
For children referred from the oncology team, please include a summary of their treatment, including chemotherapeutic agents and a summary of any radiation therapy received, including doses.
For urgent cases, such as hypoglycemia and adrenal insufficiency, page the pediatric endocrinologist on call at: 604-875-2161.
Diabetes Clinic referrals
For urgent cases, such as new-onset type 1 diabetes, page the pediatric endocrinologist on call at: 604-875-2161.
Gender Clinic referrals
If a patient and their parent/caregiver requests treatment with a puberty blocker and/or hormones, they must be assessed by a trans-competent mental health professional. Usually this is a psychologist or psychiatrist with training and experience working with transgender and gender-questioning children/youth.
For patients already assessed, send us:
- A copy of the assessment
- Any other significant reports from the patient’s mental health provider(s)
For patients who haven't started the assessment process, we will assist them in initiating this at their first intake visit, if needed.
-
Fax the referral form
Fax the completed form to the relevant number for review and triage by a BC Children’s Hospital endocrinologist:
- Endocrinology and Diabetes Clinics: 604-875-3231
- Gender Clinic: 604-875-2426
We will respond by fax within one to two weeks. We will indicate whether we have accepted the referral; it is pending receipt of more information; or we have declined it.
-
Follow-up with your patient or their caregiver
If you have not done so already, please let your patient and/or their family/caregiver know that we will contact them with an appointment date and time.
