Substance Use Treatment Referral
BC Children’s Hospital works with two community partners to offer community beds for youth and young adults who are on their substance use journey and require more intensive care and supports.
BC Children's Hospital's Substance Use Services works with both Phoenix Society and Coast Mental Health to offer these beds in Surrey, BC.
Eligibility
Substance use treatment beds at Phoenix Society and Coast Mental Health sites in Surrey, BC are designed for youth and young adults from 17 to 24 years of age. Phoenix Society provides care for male, male-identifying, or non-binary youth. Coast Mental Health provides care for female, female-identifying, or non-binary youth.
These live-in treatment programs assist youth and young adults:
- Whose primary concern is substance use
- Who have experienced several relapses
- Whose substance use treatment needs are beyond the care available in their community
Although we provide mental health supports, neither service is designed to treat mental health diagnoses. Accessing treatment at both sites is voluntary.
Referral overview
All referrals must come through a health-care provider, such as a family doctor, nurse practitioner or pediatrician.
Eligible youth or their parent or caregiver who are interested in accessing this service should speak to their health-care provider about making a referral.

Complete forms
Providers and their patient should fill out the referral form and the client participation forms completely and in collaboration. Please include all of the required information.

Submit referral forms
Health-care providers: submit the completed referral package to your local health authority liaison.
Contact information for your local health authority liaison is available in the referral package.

Review of referral
Once we receive the referral, the access and flow coordinator will review it.
We will then send the referral to the relevant service provider for review. We will send status updates through your health authority liaison. The service provider (Phoenix Society or Coast Mental Health) will then organize admission for individuals whose referrals they have accepted.
