Pediatric Oncology Fellowship
This high-quality fellowship program provides trainees with skills in all aspects of clinical oncology, hematology and research. We are preparing oncologists/hematologists who will represent the clinical work force, educators and investigators of the future.
The fellowship program offers comprehensive training in clinical and laboratory skills related to this subspecialty.
We expect trainees to develop a critical and analytical approach to clinical problems based on a solid foundation in the basic sciences, together with a comprehensive knowledge of clinical and laboratory hematology and oncology.
For those candidates wishing to develop a research career, we provide opportunities to develop laboratory-based and clinical research skills. Furthermore, developing teaching skills with particular emphasis on the ability to deliver well-organized, critical presentations on a variety of scientific topics will be part of the fellowship program.
The program is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. At present the core training is two years, with a third year in clinical or laboratory research, or other scholarly activities. We expect Canadian trainees to write the subspecialty Royal College examination.
The Oncology, Hematology and BMT Program consults on approximately 130 new oncology and 260 new hematology patients per year. We undertake approximately 25 autologous and allogeneic transplantations per year. There is a dedicated in-patient oncology ward with 24 beds, including five transplant rooms, and an out-patient clinic with close to 7,000 patient visits per year.
