Allergy
The Allergy Clinic diagnoses and treats allergic conditions in children and youth. These include food and drug allergies, asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema) and allergic rhinitis (hay fever). We provide care plans and support for patients with allergies in person or virtually.
Referral information
We currently accept patients under the age of 17.
You need a referral from a doctor to visit this clinic. Providers can find more details on the process via the Allergy Referral page.
Appointment details
Once we receive a referral from a doctor or nurse practitioner, our clinic will contact patients or families to book an appointment.
An initial visit may take up to two hours as our team may complete testing during the appointment.
Please do not take antihistamines before an appointment – see below for additional details:
- Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or Gravol (dimenhydrinate): do not take for three days prior to an appointment if it is safe to do so
- Aerius (desloratadine), Allegra (fexofenadine), Claritin (loratadine), Reactine (cetirizine), or any other antihistamines: do not take for five days prior to an appointment, if it is safe to do so
Please ensure you bring the following to all appointments:
- BC Health Services Card for patients
- Details of suspected allergens and symptoms related to possible reactions
- All allergy and asthma medications and devices (e.g. Spacer, AeroChamber)
- If relevant, please bring less common food allergens such as raw fruits and vegetables, kiwi, avocado, lentils, chickpeas, unique species of cooked fish/shellfish, for fresh food skin testing
We are a teaching institution proud to offer a residency program for doctors training to be specialists in pediatrics, clinical immunology and allergy. During visits, a medical student or resident (a medical doctor training to be an independent practitioner) will likely assess patients.
