Cerebral Palsy Early Diagnosis
The Cerebral Palsy Early Diagnosis team serves and supports infants in BC with a high probability of cerebral palsy. We conduct assessments and examinations for early diagnosis and make referrals for intervention.
The team includes developmental pediatricians, a nurse clinician, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and a social worker.
Referral information
To access our services, patients need a referral from a health-care provider. Providers can find more details on the process via our referral page.
Appointment details
After we receive and review your referral, the booking team will call you by phone to make an appointment. Please let the booking clerk know if you need an interpreter; accommodations the night before and/or the night of your appointment; or if you have considerations around legal guardianship or transportation.
On the day of your appointment, please dress your child or youth in a shirt and pants (not a onesie) for the appointment.
Below is a checklist of specific items to bring with you:
- List of community service providers that your child is currently seeing (e.g. physiotherapists, occupational therapists, etc.)
- List of any medications and the doses that your child is taking
- Equipment your child is using (e.g. hearing aids, glasses, braces/orthoses, feeding equipment etc.)
- Meal/snack (we offer free snacks, coffee and water in the waiting area)
- Anything that will put your child at ease (e.g. food, baby formula and water, their favourite toy, a blanket, etc.)
See What to Bring for a full list of items.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of your appointment time. Check in with our receptionist at the main entrance of Sunny Hill Health Centre.
A typical appointment may look like this:
- Conversation, examination and motor function assessment (60-75 minutes)
You and your child meet the team. We ask you questions about your child, and perform physical and neurological examinations to assess their movements. A therapist may perform additional assessments for your child’s motor function - Short break (approximately 10-15 minutes)
- Family conference (30 minutes)
We give you an assessment summary sheet, discuss our findings and plan the next steps with you. If necessary, we provide additional resources. If required, we book a follow-up appointment
