Nursing Resource Team Careers

About the team
The Nursing Resource Team (NRT) is a pool of registered nurses (RNs) who pride themselves on being flexible, adaptable, and with a wealth of general pediatric knowledge. They help meet the needs of the organization by providing care in several areas of the hospital. Two guiding principles on the NRT are family-centred and trauma-informed care.
We encourage employed student nurses and final practicum students to do their preceptorship with us. Nurses on the NRT are supported throughout their shifts by their own leaders and unit-based leaders.
Scheduling
We schedule all new hires for six months in a master rotation. The rotation consists of 12-hour shifts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. After this time, nurses have the flexibility to self-schedule.
Orientation
Orientation begins with:
- pediatric online learning modules
- in-person workshops
- skills labs
- simulation days
- preceptored shifts starting on T6 and T7
At 9-12 months, you will have the opportunity to participate in inpatient oncology preceptored and consolidation shifts. At 18-24 months, you will choose whether to pursue a cardiac or emergency pathway. The pathway includes:
- education
- workshops
- preceptored and consolidation shifts
After 24 months, you can pursue other pathways and participate in mentoring/leadership opportunities.
Professional development pathways
We tailor professional development pathways in the NRT to the individual. We take into consideration the experiences that nurses bring to the team, specific practice interests, and timing.
Pathways
- 12- 18 months: new grads start on inpatient units, including medical, surgical, acute rehab and oncology.
- 9–12 months and onwards: there is potential to function in a team-based care support model in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
- Around 18 months: pathway opportunities include orientation to the Emergency Department, which includes:
- pediatric advanced life support (PALS) certification
- the cardiac pod of the surgical unit
- advanced inpatient experiences such as peritoneal dialysis training
RNs on the NRT also have the opportunity to develop leadership and mentoring skills as preceptors for new hires and students.
