Oncology, Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Nursing Careers

About the unit
The Oncology/Hematology/Bone Marrow Transplant (Onc/Hem/BMT) Unit is the provincial referral centre for childhood cancer and hematologic care. Patients receive the latest innovative and supportive treatments.
As a clinical teaching site, the unit hosts a variety of learners, including nurses, physicians and allied health team members.
Nursing care
Each nurse has two to three patients, depending on acuity. Acutely ill patients may require 1:1 or 2:1 nursing care until their condition improves.
Nurses in this inpatient unit are responsible for:
- Care delivery
- Coordination and discharge planning for their patients
- Facilitating the education of students/preceptors throughout their shifts, if needed
Flexible scheduling
BC Children's Hospital uses a master rotation schedule for automated vacation planning. However, all inpatient nurses can also self-schedule.
Learning opportunities
We offer many educational courses throughout orientation and ongoing. Opportunities include both unit-specific education and site-wide education, such as leadership and mentorship courses.
Program nurses progress through an educational pathway that includes:
- Pediatric Onc/Hem/BMT specialty courses
- Chemotherapy/biotherapy certification through the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON)
- Pediatric BMT certification
BC Children’s Hospital provides specialized education in-house within new team members’ first two years on the unit.
