The Medical Inpatient Unit is a 48-bed unit that provides care to infants, children and adolescents who require medical care for general pediatric conditions. These may include metabolic, respiratory, nephrology, endocrine and mental health diagnoses. As a clinical teaching site, the Medical Inpatient Unit hosts a wide variety of learners, including nurses, physicians, and allied health team members.
Nurses on the Medical Inpatient Unit are responsible for care delivery, coordination, and discharge planning for their patients and may be required to facilitate the education of students/preceptors throughout their shift. New Graduate nurses and internationally trained nurses are hired into these units, along with experienced staff.
Educational opportunities are offered within the unit as well as the larger health organization, including education to promote skill development, mentorship and leadership development. We also offer in-house training related to peritoneal dialysis, post-op kidney transplant care, and care of tracheostomy and ventilator-dependent patients.
Each nurse has three patients, depending on the acuity of the patients. Acutely ill patients may require 1:1 or 2:1 nursing care until their condition improves.
New hires are provided with a master rotation schedule. They are able choose whether to continue on their master rotation schedule or switch to self-scheduling.
There are many educational courses offered throughout orientation and on an ongoing basis. Educational opportunities include both unit specific education as well as site wide education, such as leadership and mentorship courses.
